Organic winter makeup

As the seasons change, so do our favourite makeup styles. Gone now are the rosy, delicate colours of spring and summer, and we’re looking to richer and more luxurious shades as the days darken. When you begin to change your look for the season you might consider changing something more about your beauty routine. We all love the established, mainstream beauty brands; however, what many beauty-conscious people don’t know is just how harmful some of their products can be. Not only can leading brands contain parabens, metals, petroleum and synthetic fragrances, all of which can be harmful to your skin, they are also extremely damaging to the environment when they’re produced and to dispose of when you’ve finished using them. In this day and age when we have so much access to information and data, and it would be irresponsible to just ignore the very public impact that investing in makeup can have on ourselves and the world we live in. There are a plethora of gorgeous beauty products from empowering and inspiring brands that endeavour to create products that provide the best possible finish but that contain natural and organic products that are sourced and produced sustainably.

Lips – Ilia

Organic beauty takes a luxurious turn with Ilia cosmetics, who endeavour to create high-quality products that are not harmful to produce or use. Ilia’s lip sticks are free from artificial fragrances and ingredients such as sulphates, petrochemicals and silicones, replacing them with a recipe of moisturizing and reparative beeswax and oils, which include sesame, grapeseed, rosehip and sunflower seed oils, to create the same creamy consistency of mainstream lipsticks but that are significantly less aggressive and irritating to skin. We love their lipstick in the ‘Strike It Up’ shade; a rich, warm and rusty red colour, it’ll complement many of your favourite winter ensembles, which you can shop at maryjanefashion.com. Team this organic, vegetarian-friendly and gluten-free product with a crisp white shirt, tapered trousers, heels and a warm faux fur coat.

Nails – Orly

You might not know it but nail varnishes can contain a whole host of chemical nasties, for example formaldehyde, toluene and DBP which can cause long lasting health problems as well as damaging your nails, nail beds and cuticles. Orly has risen as one of the leading organic nail polish brands that are fashion conscious (regularly producing new shades to suit every season) as well as leaving out the harmful ingredients that can be so problematic to our bodies and our environment. This season, we’d opt for this gorgeous Chocolate-Martini shade that shimmers with bronze tints and tones to lend your look an autumnal finish. A favourite on the runways at Donna Karan and Narciso Rodriguez, this is a colour that you should definitely incorporate into your collection.

Eyes – BWC

BWC, or Beauty Without Cruelty, is a brand that provides certified vegan products that have never been tested on animals and don’t have any animal-based products in their ingredients. Additionally, their products leave out harmful parabens, synthetic fragrances, carmine and formaldehyde, looking instead to natural mineral recipes to create their unique and luxurious beauty products. We love their flawless loose eye shadows that don’t contain oils, waxes and talc but are instead light, mineral consistencies that provide lovely glittering sheens. Suitable for both day and night looks, this shadow is versatile and non-irritating to skin; a product you will be sure to return to time and again.
